How does ufc work
I have explained how the decision on the winner is made if the fight goes to distance. When scoring a round, a few things are considered; effective striking and grappling, effective aggressiveness, and control of the fighting area. Not all of the mentioned above are equally important. Judges should only consider aggressiveness if there is literally zero advantage on striking and grappling. If both fighters also show no signs of aggressiveness, the judges can look at which fighter is controling the UFC Octagon area.
The round happened only once in the UFC. Petz won via unanimous decision with one of the judges scoring the fight including the only round in UFC history.
One more thing worth mentioning is fouls in a UFC fight. For the judges to award a score of to a fighter on that round based on impact, the fighter must demonstrate striking or grappling skills that essentially demoralizes, exhaust, or overwhelms his opponent. Throughout UFC history, there has only been one round. After the fight, at least one judge scored the bout for Petz, which scores on one of the rounds.
Needless to say, it was most likely the most embarrassing fight of his career. Based on the Unified Rules of MMA, judges can only score 10 — 7 rounds when a fighter completely overpowers their opponent in every area, including domination and impact in striking and grappling.
Additionally, the fight is close to being stopped in this scoring. How fights end in UFC has fluctuated over time. Additionally, the UFC data of this time recorded at least three via majority decision, three via disqualification DQ , as well as three draws and two no-contests.
The reason that we are initially looking at UFC data that dates back to is that, by the end of that year, the knockout rate slowly declined. More fights were ending in decisions rather than knockouts, likely because components were fighting smarter and the number of fights occurring in each weight class. More recently, the data drastically changed. Below are the statistics for how fights end in the UFC throughout To add, the larger the weight class , the higher the knockout rates are.
Out of all the knockouts, the heavyweight division will usually hold approximately 60 percent to 80 percent of the total knockouts done in a year. There is supposedly no publicly written guide on how the judges give points on their scorecard during each UFC event. There is a general sense of observing which fighter is more dominant; however, there is not actually one in terms of deciding the points and the score.
Most likely, the judges observe the fight at their own professional discretion. Obviously, these judges are trained to see which fighter is dominating the fight and which ones are not. Wrestling is a fun sport that requires special skills for safe and effective fights. Whether your goal is to become a professional wrestler or just do it for fun, you would want to have professional Judge 1 thinks Fighter A won all three rounds decisively. That means he scored each individual round a in favor of Fighter A.
At the end of a fight, the three-round scores of a judge are added individually. Are you still with me here? This means they each scored rounds 1 and 2 a in favor of Fighter A , but the last round is scored in favor of Fighter B.
So after adding up the three rounds, Judges 2 and 3 have a total score of , albeit still in favor of Fighter A. When all three judges agree on the winner of a fight, it is called a Unanimous Decision. In short, judges score fights based on specific criteria provided in the official Unified Rules of MMA. So to clarify, these criteria are prioritized. That means that the next one is only considered if the higher priority one is even for both fighters. So for example, if one fighter is clearly outstriking the other, then that fighter wins the round without the judges even considering aggression or Octagon control.
However, if the two fighters are even in the striking and grappling, then aggressiveness is the deciding factor with Octagon control still being ignored. But if both fighters are passive, then Octagon control will be used to score the round.
It notes that striking and grappling with immediate impact towards ending the match outweigh cumulative striking or grappling. So basically, if Fighter A knocks down Fighter B , and Fighter B is constantly landing light jabs, then Fighter A had more effective striking, even if Fighter B having more total strikes. The rules go into much further detail on what constitutes effective grappling, which you can read here.
The scoring criteria have been clearer since the implementation of the current rules back in The language for scoring rounds other than a such as , , and even is now much more specific. However, a judge is also required to consider awarding a based on either impact or dominance.
