Why is scuba an acronym

Most people would know this term from hospital TV dramas featuring doctors who look like models. An AED is the electronic device used to shock the heart to get it pumping again after life-threatening cardiac events. This is caused by bubbles, lung over-expansion injury, and decompressions.

BCD — B uoyancy C ontrol D evice, or B uoyancy C ompensation D evice, is the jacket that keeps divers positively buoyant on the surface or neutrally buoyant underwater. CESA — C ontrolled E mergency S wimming A scent is the emergency skill practiced during the open water course on how to ascend to the surface safely. DIN — D eutsche I ndustry N orm is the valve system that requires the regulator to be directly screwed into the tank value as opposed to being clamped on.

The same as a yoke valve. DPV — D iver P ropulsion V ehicle is an underwater device that help divers scoot through the water without kicking. This is when a diver can try diving without doing a license first, under the close supervision of an instructor. EFR — E mergency F irst R esponse, as part of the rescue course, divers are required to take a basic first aid course.

NDL — N o D ecompression L imit is the time limit a diver has to adhere to at a certain depth to keep Nitrogen absorption at safe levels. OW — O pen W ater, the first level diving certification where a diver can dive without professional supervision.

RDP — R ecreational D ive P lanner, this is a decompression table in which you can calculate no-stop dive time under water. RNT — R esidual N itrogen T ime, is how much Nitrogen is left in the body after multiple dives to certain depths and durations.

As an acronym, it describes pretty well what it is! It also comes with pockets and D-rings for storing accessories and tools. Although the SPG is the device that indicates how much air is left in your tank, we use the term interchangeably to mean the whole console that contains your air gauge, depth gauge and sometimes a compass. They are ideal for the calm clear waters we sail in and are comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. They can also be worn in the water for activities like wakeboarding or when dinghy diving!

Tip: On longer sails, wear a shirt and plenty of sunscreen to avoid the dreaded PFD tan! On a smaller dinghy or on the dock, there are also handheld VHFs used to communicate.
